BLACKPINK is coming to Netflix with their own documentary

The girl group and Netflix announced that BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky will premiere next month as an all-access documentary. The group’s label YG Entertainment told Korean media that the doc will cover the four years since the group’s explosive debut in 2016 with video footage from their days training to look at their their home life, behind-the-scenes stories and honest interviews with the members.

While Netflix has launched some original Korean television shows and dramas on its platform—including some starring top K-pop stars—a documentary focused on one artist in the same vein of Lady Gaga’s Five Foot Two or Taylor Swift’s Miss Americana marks new territory. With BLACKPINK not only having the streaming numbers to support being a beloved global act (their “Kill This Love” music video just hit one billion views on YouTube last week just a year-and-a-half after release) but a new album also out in October, the timing seems all too perfect for Netflix to strike.
